Give From Your IRA

If you are age 70½ or older, giving from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) can be a tax-smart way to help ensure babies across the DMV have the diapers they need to stay clean, dry, and healthy.

Sometimes called an “IRA gift” or “IRA charitable rollover,” a gift from your IRA allows you to put retirement assets to work for a cause you care about while potentially realizing valuable tax benefits.

Curious about IRA Giving?

What Is a Qualified Charitable Distribution?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution, or QCD, allows individuals age 70½ or older to make a charitable gift directly from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to an eligible nonprofit organization like Greater DC Diaper Bank.

Traditional IRAs are generally funded with pre-tax dollars that are invested for retirement. When funds are withdrawn, those distributions are typically included in the account holder’s taxable income. A QCD offers eligible donors another option: directing funds from an IRA straight to a qualified charity.

In 2026, eligible individuals may make up to $111,000 in QCDs from their IRA during the year.

What Is a Required Minimum Distribution?

Beginning at age 73, most traditional IRA account holders are required to withdraw a minimum amount from their retirement account each year. This is called a Required Minimum Distribution, or RMD. Failing to take the required distribution can result in a tax penalty.

For eligible donors, a QCD can count toward satisfying all or part of that annual RMD while supporting a charitable organization they care about.

Why Make a Gift from Your IRA?

A QCD can be a particularly tax-efficient way to make a charitable gift.

Unlike a typical IRA withdrawal, an eligible QCD is generally not included in your taxable income. A QCD also reduces the balance remaining in your IRA, which may reduce the amount of your RMDs in future years.

At the same time, your gift provides critical support to help Greater DC Diaper Bank get diapers into the hands of families across our region.

Is an IRA Gift Right for You?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution may be worth considering if you:

  • Are age 70½ or older;
  • Have a traditional IRA;
  • Want to make a charitable gift directly from your IRA;
  • Are age 73 or older and need to satisfy some or all of your annual RMD; or
  • Are looking for a tax-efficient way to make a meaningful charitable gift.

Your IRA custodian or financial advisor can help you determine whether a QCD is appropriate for your individual circumstances and assist you with initiating your gift.
